It is not too surprising that the debut recording by
Grover Mitchell's big band sounds a bit like
Count Basie's. The trombonist/arranger was a member of
Basie's band from 1962-70 and would have two future stints (including one as the orchestra's leader). This particular out-of-print LP from a small Los Angeles label features
Mitchell's arrangements for a 16-piece big band; eight of the ten songs are his originals. Among the key sidemen are trumpeters
Al Aarons, bass trombonist
Jimmy Cheatham, the reeds of
Buddy Collette,
Jackie Kelso and
Charlie Owens and pianist
Jeannie Cheatham. Fine, swinging music, but this album will be difficult to find.
