Six LPs of material from the 1972 Newport Jazz Festival (the first one held in New York) were released by Cobblestone, and the first four volumes (released as a pair of two-LP sets) feature jam sessions held at Radio City Music Hall. This particular set has some extraordinary music. Trumpeters
Joe Newman and
Nat Adderley, tenors
Illinois Jacquet and
Budd Johnson, trombonist
Tyree Glenn, baritonist
Gerry Mulligan, pianist
Jaki Byard, bassist
Chubby Jackson and drummer
Elvin Jones (an unusual assortment of personalities) jam spiritedly on three numbers, with "Perdido" being quite memorable. "Blue 'N' Boogie" (which is over 28 minutes long) features trumpeters Clark Terry and Howard McGhee, tenors
Sonny Stitt and
Dexter Gordon, vibraphonist
Gary Burton, organist
Jimmy Smith, pianist
George Duke, bassist
Al McKibbon and drummer
Art Blakey, but the most interesting selection is "So What." On that piece, trumpeter
Harry "Sweets" Edison, trombonist Kai Winding, guitarist
Chuck Wayne, pianist
Herbie Hancock, bassist
Larry Ridley, drummer
Tony Williams and the tenors of
James Moody,
Flip Phillips,
Dexter Gordon and
Zoot Sims are heard from, but
Rahsaan Roland Kirk (taking a marathon solo that utilizes his tenor, stritch, manzello and a whistle) steals the show. This exciting music is highly recommended.
