Album Review

Believe it or not, it took till 2005 for the easy-pop, piano duo Ferrante & Teicher to release an official live album. All-Time Greatest Hits Live on Stage is culled from their personal vaults, and while the collection is a wonderful gift for fans, there is one major drawback. The sound quality of most of these recordings is rough, sourced from a primitive tape recorder placed somewhere in the audience with chatter, coughs, and tape deterioration all distracting from the experience. While this may be disappointing for anyone looking to hear these songs the way he remembers them, fans get a rare look at the way the duo interacted with its audience. The in-between song chatter is fun to hear, since the two are more flippant than expected, and to hear them play without the sweet production found on many of their albums puts the emphasis back on their virtuoso playing. If the "greatest hits" portion of the title is why you're here, try any one of the numerous other compilations. This is for the Ferrante & Teicher completist who will no doubt cherish the chance to hear them live and in their prime despite the rough sound.
