I live on the city’s north side with my son David, twin daughters Kate and Anna, dog Riley and cat Shadow. Actually “live” might be stretching it. I sleep there when I’m not chasing or delivering my kids to a rink, gym or golf course somewhere in this great province of ours. I somehow manage to fit that that stuff in while putting in enough time at work to avoid getting fired. I also serve or have served on a number of local committees including the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards, the Uniroyal World Junior Curling Championships way back when, the RCGA Canadian University and College Golf Championships, the CIS Men’s Hockey Championship and the CIS Women’s Basketball Championship. I’m currently an Atlantic adjudicator for the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, a former member of the national executive of the Radio and Television News Directors Association and a former member of the Broadcast News National Editorial Committee. My most important position, however, and certainly the most gratifying is serving as Freddy Mac’s golf swing coach. We’ve made some great strides and remain confident we’ll be ready when Fred qualifies for the Champions Tour. Although I was born in Halifax and lived in Saint John, Port Hawksbury; Montreal; Rochester, New York and Levittown, Pennsylvania, Fredericton is definitely home. I moved here in grade six, graduated from FHS and attended (note I didn’t say graduated from) UNB. In Fredericton, I delivered newspapers, prescriptions, pizzas and paper towels. Fredericton is where I survived a couple of pretty good floods, more than a few youthful indiscretions, lost my innocence and fell in love. It’s where I got married – twice. It’s where my three children were born. And while it’s not where I started my professional career, it’s where I chose to practise my craft and raise my family. I’ve had the privilege of meeting and interviewing premiers and prime ministers as well as sports stars such as Bobby Orr, Guy Lafleur, Rocket Richard, Lorie Kane and Mike Weir. I’ve covered Grey Cup games, Stanley Cup games, I was at Olympic Stadium for infamous “Blue Monday” as well as the major league all-star game, the U.S. Open and a number of Briers, but my sports highlight would have to be calling the play-by-play of the Sutherland’s Marysville Royals Canadian Senior Baseball Championship in Winnipeg – although a hockey trip with the Fredericton Capitals to Bonavista and the “O Happy Site” motel would have to be a close second. Just ask Danny Grant. I’m sure it was one of the highlights of his career as well.
